“That’s My King”

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”             I Peter 2:9-10

Jesus Christ is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords! (Rev. 17:14) To quote a professor of mine from Graduate School, the late Dr. S. M. Lockridge a Baptist Pastor from San Diego, CA “He’s the centerpiece of civilization. He stands alone in Himself. He’s honest. He’s unique. He’s unparalleled. He’s unprecedented. He’s supreme. He’s preeminent. He’s the grandest idea in literature. He’s the mightiest personality in philosophy. He’s the supreme problem in higher criticism. He’s the fundamental doctrine of historic theology. He’s the carnal necessity of spiritual religion. That’s my King…. He had no predecessor and He’ll have no successor. There’s nobody before Him and there’ll be nobody after Him. You can’t impeach Him and He’s not going to resign. That’s my King!”

You and I have the privilege of submitting to His reign, becoming one of His children, of belonging to His forever family.  All it takes is inviting Him into our hearts and bending our knees before Him and declaring Him Lord. Martin Luther once said: “Before my conversion, had you knocked at the door of my heart and asked who lives there, I would have said,’ Martin Luther lives here.’ Had you come in to see me, you would have found a monk with his head shaved, sleeping in a hair shirt… But now if you knock and ask who lives here, I will reply,” Martin Luther no longer lives here; Jesus the Lord lives here now.’”

Inside our hearts there is a throne, and around that throne are all the components that make up our lives—finances, jobs, marriage, children, home, hobbies, habits, leisure, church, entertainment, health, friends…. When Jesus sits as King on the throne of our hearts, all these areas fall into submission under His authority.  In the process, we find He blesses that over which He reigns. He brings peace, joy, and everlasting hope. He elicits our worship, our praise, and our everlasting thanksgiving.

Not many people have ‘the’ for a middle name. Oh, there was Peter the Great and Pliny the Elder.  And there was Pepin the Short, Frederick the Wise, Attila the Hun, Kermit the Frog, and Ivan the Terrible.  Louis the Stammerer was King of France in the 800’s; he was the son of Charles the Bald. And I’d also better mention Charles the Fat, Eric the Red, and the favorite inhabitant of the Hundred Acre Wood, Winnie the Pooh.

Among historical figures, only a chosen few have been characterized as The Great. From the Biblical era, we have Cyrus the Great, Darius the Great, Xerxes the Great, and Herod the Great. Between the Old and New Testaments our world was changed forever by Alexander the Great. There was Otto the Great, Constantine and eventually Europe came under the sway of Charles the Great better known as Charlemagne But here is the interesting thing, Jesus has never been called “Jesus the Great” or Christ the Great.” He is great of course and greatly to be praised. But His greatness isn’t derived from a comparison with other Kings and conquerors. He is in a class all by Himself! Philippians 2:9-10 tells us, “Therefore God has highly exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him a name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth, and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.”  He is King of the Jews. He is King of Israel. He is the King of Righteousness. He is the King of Peace. He is King over all the earth. (Zech. 14:4,8-9) He is the King of Glory(Psalm 24)! He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. “That’s My King!”  Make Him your King today.
